The significance of Amarnath Yatra There is an interesting story behind Amarnath Yatra. According to Hindu belief, the Amarnath cave was the very place that Lord Shiva selected to dispel the secrets of immortality to Goddess Parvati. So one day, when Parvati asked why he wore the Mundamala (bread of heads), Shiva replied that he did so to keep account of every time Parvati died and was reborn. Parvati asked him to share the secrets of immortality so that she could always be with Mahadev. Mahadev made up his mind to tell the secret of immortality to Parvati. Still, for that, he needed a secluded place where no living being could disturb them or overhear the secret of immortality. The story goes that Shiv Ji did not even take his favorite accomplices with him to Amarnath. Leaving Nandi at Pahalgam, he released the moon from his hair at Chandanwari and let go of the snakes at Lake Sheshnag. Mahadev did not even take his son Ganesha to Amarnath and left him at Mahagunas Parvat. The five elements from which all life forms are made (Earth, fire, water, sky, and air) were left at Panchtarni. Taking extra precautions, Mahadev created a Rudra called Kalagni and ordered the Rudra to eliminate every living thing in the vicinity of the holy cave. But, in spite of all this, two eggs that lay under the deerskin of Mahadev on which he was sitting, survived and heard the secret of immortality. Pigeons hatched from these eggs and became immortal along with goddess Parvati.
